“But I didn’t get a dog not to do...”
We hear this phrase extremely often when we talk to folks about implementing rules, structure, and boundaries into their relationship with their dog. “I didn’t get a dog to not give it affection. I didn’t get a dog to be a drill sergeant. I didn’t get a dog to sit in a crate when guests come over.” But we highly doubt you got a dog to create mayhem in your home or to bite people either. Sounds snarky, but it is something we see all the time. Nobody got a dog to send it to us for training. Most dog owners just don’t know the importance of these things in the early stages. There is a reason why we can make such dramatic changes in dogs when they come to us. By simply holding the dog accountable, taking away affection, working the dog, and making things black and white for them, we organically get better behaved dogs. Structure is SO important to a dogs daily life. They thrive with it and they need leadership—otherwise they will take matters into their own hands and you will see some big problems arise. We believe in being proactive vs reactive. Start training your dog and setting boundaries from the start and the relationship will be entirely different.
