The children came back, the children came back
back where their hearts grow strong
back where they all belong
the children came bac
VERSE
I'm Doug Nicholls, I'm jimmy little, with a royal telephone
I'm the world champ in '68, Boy I'm Lionel Rose
I'm William Cooper, I take a stand when no one even knows
I'm the walk off, I'm the sound of the children coming home

VERSE
Let me take it home, I'm Rumba, I'm the sand hills on Cummera
I'm Les Briggs, I'm Paul Briggs, I'm Uncle Ringo with all them kids
Im Uncle Buddy, everybody loves me Ain't none below, ain't none above me
Im the carvings outta every scar tree, Im those flats that birthed Archie
Now Mr abbott, think about it, me and you we feel the same
That might sound strange, I'm just saying, we both unsettled when the boats came
I'm Gurrumul, I'm Archie, I'm everything you ask me
I'm everything you can’t be, I'm the dead hearts, heart beat
HOOK
The children came back, the children came back
back where their hearts grow strong
back where they all belong
the children came back
The children came back, the children came back
back where they understand
back to their mothers' land
the children came back
The Children Came Back advances the story and pays homage to They Took The Children Away. Archie Roach AM released the song 25 years ago from the seminal album Charcoal Lane and it’s with his blessings, this new sequel of a song is released to champion black excellence and remind us of the amazing things achieved since. Jimmy Little, Adam Goodes, Lionel Rose, Patty Mills are just some of the greats referenced within this almighty shout-out by Briggs. “I love Briggs’ song. It's about our Indigenous heroes. Using a part of my song, where it says 'the children came back' is really what the song is about. I feel proud to be a part of what Briggs hopes to achieve and I really love that he used young children to play the heroes because they are our future heroes.” Archie Roach AM
The compelling clip features Briggs with Archie Roach, Paul Kelly and the very brave 3-year old Samara Muir who recently made prime time mainstream TV with news of her distressing experience of racism by kids her own age. Just like its predecessor Bad Apples from the highly acclaimed sophomore release Sheplife (Golden Era Records) this clip has the power to reach into the hearts of a conscious Australia, and from there to take root and grow into the wider psyche. Thanks to Reconciliation Australia the film clip for The Children Came Back is released on July 3rd to coincide with NAIDOC Week and is a collaboration between Golden Era artist Briggs & Skinnyfish Music artists.
‘Any musical collaboration that brings Urban and remote Australia together makes a positive contribution’, says Mark Grose Skinnyfish Music.
What started as a collaboration built for triple j’s Like a Version, it was decided to officially record the song due to the massive amount of positive feedback it received. Briggs [Golden Era Records], Gurrumul, Dewayne Everettsmith and B2M [Skinnyfish Music] re-group; this time with producers James Mangohig [Sietta] and Michael Hohnen [Skinnyfish Music]. There are changes from the rendition performed for Like a Version. Clap sticks replace an electric hip hop beat, a yidaki from N.E. Arnhem Land plays bass, B2M chant haunting words and then there’s that undeniable anthemic male choral quality that hooks inside your head. “This is a history lesson, a monologue, a celebration and an education in one song”, says Briggs.
