La madrugada del 20 de Diciembre de 1989, en vísperas de navidad, Panamá fue víctima de la peor masacre a manos de los Estados Unidos, durante la invasión militar que devasto poblaciones enteras y humildes como El Chorrillo, San Miguelito y Colón. Según George Bush, la operación denominada "Causa Justa", sirvió para salvaguardar las vidas norteamericanas en Panamá y sacar a Manuel Antonio Noriega del poder; el saldo, miles de muertos y desaparecidos, en su gran mayoría civiles que nada tuvieron que ver con el gobierno. Muchos años después aún se desconoce una cifra precisa de víctimas. El hecho fue condenado por la comunidad internacional, sin embargo ello poco importó a los Estados Unidos que cerró todos los expedientes de norteamericanos señalados en violaciones de Derechos Humanos y desconoció una compensación justa a las victimas. Los gobiernos que siguieron después de la invasión poco caso han hecho a las victimas, por presiones y manipulaciones de la embajada norteamericana o por simple complicidad con ellos sin embargo, estos aún se mantienen en lucha por que se les conceda justicia y que se reconozca el 20 de Diciembre, día de Duelo Nacional en Panamá.
